International connections to Lusaka, then flight to Mfuwe International Airport. Ground transfer arranged privately — approximately 90 minutes through the Game Management Area. Option to charter from Lusaka to dirt strip nearby.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

FITNESS

Walking safaris cover variable terrain in heat. Guests that choose this activity should be comfortable walking two to four hours at a moderate pace.

WHAT TO BRING

Neutral colours — khaki, olive, tan. Closed walking shoes or boots. A hat and sun protection.  A pair of binoculars and your favorite camera.  The camp provides everything else.

WHAT TO EXPECT

On the first night, the guide tells the story of this ground and explains the options.  After that, each day becomes what you want it to be.  Our guests set their own itineraries.  Just arrive with curiosity and open mind and be ready to experience a safari of a lifetime at this unique safari heritage site.

Chibembe Wildlife Reserve is in the Mwanya Chiefdom on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River, in Zambia's Eastern Province, opposite the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park.

When is Chibembe open?

Chibembe Camp operates May through November, with the dry season from June through October offering the best walking conditions and most concentrated wildlife.

What is the rate for Chibembe Camp?

The camp is offered on a fully inclusive, whole-camp private hire basis at USD 15,000 per day. The camp accommodates eight guests, flexing to seventeen.

Is this the same Chibembe as the original Norman Carr camp?

Chibembe Wildlife Reserve is the present-day private reserve at the historical site where Norman Carr established the first photographic safari camp in Northern Rhodesia in the 1950s and built Chibembe Safari Lodge in the mid-1970s. The reserve opened to guests in June 2026 under new stewardship.
